March Newsletter 2017

TOES, TAPS & TIDBITS
March 2017
RECITAL REMINDER
This year our Recital will be on Monday, May 29, 2017 and begin at 5:00pm. Rehearsal will be the same day and will start at 8:00am. Students only need to be there for the rehearsal of their dance(s), (schedule will follow later.) In order to be in the Recital, performing students are required to attend the Rehearsal. NO PHOTOS OR VIDEO TAPING MAY BE TAKEN DURING THE RECITAL. STILL PHOTOGRAPHY AND VIDEOTAPING MAY BE DONE AT THE REHEARSAL ONLY.
Here is a brief summary, for those of you who are new to the recital. We will be on a very tight schedule. We start at 6:00am unloading and setting up equipment. This takes about 2 hours. Rehearsal begins at 8am and goes until 3:00. We take a break until 4:00 which is when everyone is required to be at the theatre, and the show starts at 5:00. The recital runs 4 hours, which is pretty amazing since we have about 55 dances in the show. This includes a 20 min intermission, trophies and finale. In order to shorten the show, we have combined many classes.
BACKSTAGE CREW
Volunteers are needed to help backstage for the recital. At this time, I still need people to help look after the students while they are backstage. Creative, Tumblebear & Hippity Hop classes need 2 parents per dance to volunteer. If you would like to be in charge of your child’s class, you must request that. If we already have enough parents for that class, you will be assigned another one. At this point, we cannot guarantee that you will be in the same room as your child, but we will do our best to accommodate you. Also, if you help backstage you will still see at least half of the show without having to buy a ticket, and you will see your child’s dance. ALL VOLUNTEERS MUST ATTEND THE VOLUNTEER MEETING WHICH IS SCHEDULED FOR SATURDAY, MAY 20th at 2:15pm.
IMPORTANT
Please be respectful to your teacher, classmates, and your body by attending class and getting to class on time. We have had quite a few absences lately. Your attendance is very important because dance is built from a foundation such as language or math. It is quite frustrating to “pick it up” without the necessary basics and it is unrealistic to think your body will stay in shape without being in class regularly. We are working on routines for the recital and it is difficult to choreograph and teach dances without everyone present. ALSO, VERY IMPORTANT: IF YOU ARE ABSENT 4 TIMES TOTAL DURING THE MONTHS OF MARCH, APRIL AND MAY, YOU MAY BE TOLD THAT YOU CANNOT BE IN THE RECITAL!! IT IS NOT FAIR TO THE CLASS OR TO YOUR CHILD TO PUT THEM ON STAGE WHEN THEY DO NOT KNOW THE DANCE!! Note: If you are in Ballet 1-8, due to the Ballet Exams, you will only be starting your recital dance after March 25th. All dances must be completed by May 1st. That means we only have 4 classes to learn the entire dance, so DON’T BE ABSENT!!
PICTURE DAY
Photos will be taken of the students in their recital costumes on Sunday, May 21, 2017 (schedule will follow). The photos will be taken by Photography by Skip Stowers.
RECITAL MUSIC FLASH DRIVES
Flash drives of the recital music for each dance will be available for home practice at the end of February. This is a wonderful tool for the students so they can perfect their recital dances. The Flash Drives are $8.00 for the first song, $2 for each additional song, payable in advance, and may be ordered at the desk. As a bonus, if you only use your flash drive for Recital Music, you may reuse it next year!
SPRING BREAK
We will be closed for Spring Break from March 12th- 19th. These classes do not need to be made up; they are figured into our yearly dance session. For the remainder of the school year, there are no other days that we will be closed. We WILL be open for class on Saturday, March 11th. (Make sure to download our APP so that you ALWAYS know what’s going on!)
TROPHIES
This is the last call for students who have been with us 5 years or longer. We must order trophies for the recital and are not responsible if you fail to notify us. Please email our receptionist, Mrs. Seiter, at yvonne@leggzdance.com by March 11th. Please include your child’s first and last name and the number of years at the studio. We must have your request via email. If a trophy is not ordered because a parent forgot to notify us, then the parent will have to pay for their child’s trophy.
MAKE UP CLASSES
We are now in full recital mode. If your child needs to make up an absence in another class, please try to bring her/him to another class that is taught by the same teacher. This will make it easier for them to go over what your child missed and it will help them to catch up.
RECITAL DVD’S
The cost for a Commemorative Recital DVD is $35 ($40 for Blu-ray). However, if you order your copy by March 31st, the cost will only be $25 ($30 for Blu-ray)! You may place your order at http://www.diacomproductions.comor by calling 1-877-234-2266. Don’t miss out! (Order forms will be available soon.)
ATTENTION PARENTS OF STUDENTS AGES 3 – KINDERGARTEN (CREATIVE DANCE, TUMBLEBEARS AND SOME HIPPITY HOP STUDENTS.)
When you signed the recital agreement, one of the statements that you agreed to read, “All students are required to stay for the entire length of the recital”. Parents of students ages 3 through Kindergarten, you do have another option. You may purchase a half price ticket for your child ($12.50) and then they may sit with you during Act 2 of the recital. (This includes all Creative Dance & Tumblebear students and a portion of the Hippity Hop students.) This ticket must be purchased 2 weeks prior to the recital (May 13th). If you decide not to purchase a half price ticket for your child, (or try to purchase one after May 13th), your child will then sit in the balcony with our wonderful volunteers during Act 2. If you try to get your child without having purchased the half price ticket, you will forfeit your $50 recital fee. In order to continue to run a very organized recital, by May 13th , we must have a list of our students who are being picked up by their parents. They will have special markings on their wristbands, and will be escorted to a designated area to be picked up by a parent with the matching wristband. In order to find a student who is not on that list, we have to stop the show and that is just not possible. If your student remains with the volunteers for Act 2, please be assured that your child will be fine in the balcony. (In 29 years, we have never had a problem.) If your child is ill or upset, WE WILL FIND YOU. Otherwise, they are comfortable and enjoying the 2nd half of the show. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to talk to me. We want both of you to have a great show!
STUDIO CLIENT BUSINESS MONTH!
This month we are celebrating some of the businesses that our clients own. I sent out an email telling parents to send me information about a business that they own, so that I can get the word out to all of you! I can’t endorse a business, unless I have used their service or product, but if they are smart enough to bring their child to Leggz, then I would say that their business would be worth patronizing!

February Newsletter 2017

TOES, TAPS & TIDBITS
February 2017
THIS MESSAGE IS FOR ALL PARENTS WHO SAY THEY DON’T READ OUR NEWSLETTERS. (You’re probably not reading this one either.) These newsletters are designed to keep you up to date on what’s happening at the studio. They also serve as a reminder of important dates and deadlines such as costume money, ballet exams, videos, recital dates, etc. Newsletters are now emailed to you and are also on the blog page of our website. We usually have the same IMPORTANT messages on the marker board and the front door, and all newsletters are on the bulletin board. There is no excuse for not knowing what’s going on. Being uninformed hurts your child, as they are not prepared for or miss certain events. We cannot possibly call every student in the school and remind them, which is why we also have a Leggz app. We send out the newsletters on the last week of the month. If you change your email address, please let us know. By the time April comes, we will be updating the “Blog” page on the website almost every week. So please look for them and READ.
LEGGZ APP!
By now, all of you should have been informed about our Leggz APP. This is a wonderful way to keep informed! We can send you reminders about events, payments due, studio closings, etc. IF you have not already done so, please download our APP!
Here is a link to the promotional video telling all about the Leggz App. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=66qnJKRfXVc
ATTENTION PARENTS
Has your child been studying with us for 5 years or longer? If so, please send an email to Mrs. Seiter at yvonne@leggzdance.com with your child’s first and last name and the number of years with the studio. Emails must be received by February 28th, so we can order a trophy for them.
RODEO DAY
Yes, we are open on Friday Feb 17th, Rodeo Day. Our next holiday is Spring Break, when we will be closed March 12th-19th If there is any other time that the schools are closed, except for weather emergencies, we are still open for class. If you are ever unsure, please consult our “Blog” page on our website and read the current newsletter. Or, even better, download our APP!
PARENT’S VISITATION
We will be having Parent’s Visitation for MOST classes the week of February 6th – 11th. Still and video photography are welcome. Please refrain from bringing small children who may disrupt the class. The new Beginning Ballet, Beginning Hip Hop, and Saturday 12:30 Creative Dance classes WILL NOT be having Parent’s Visitation. They have not been studying long enough and it would be unfair for them to have observers.
As a bonus, if you only use your flash drive for our Recital Music, you may reuse it next year!
BACKSTAGE CREW
Time to join our Backstage Club! Volunteers are needed for the rehearsal and the recital to help out backstage. Various positions (which I will assign), need to be filled. If you would like to join in the excitement backstage, please notify my receptionist, Mrs. Seiter, as soon as possible. Please note that when you sign up, I will be placing you WHERE I NEED YOU. That might not be with your own child. Each Creative, Tumblebear and Hippity Hop dance must have 2 volunteer parents. There will be a MANDATORY meeting for all volunteers on Saturday, May 2Oth from 2:15-3:15pm
SPECIALTY NUMBER REHEARSAL DATES
Dates have been set for our specialty number rehearsals. Students must attend ALL practices.

January Newsletter 2017

TOES, TAPS & TIDBITS
January 2017
HAPPY NEW YEAR!
I hope that everyone had a wonderful holiday & that you are eager to get back to work. We will be learning many new things during this half of the year so we will need your undivided attention.
RECITAL
Mark your calendars NOW! We are unable to change the rehearsal/recital date. Rehearsal will be Monday, May 29, 2017 during the morning and afternoon. Recital will also be Monday, May 29, 2017 starting at 5:00pm and ending at 9pm. That includes the trophy ceremony and a 20 min intermission. NOTE FOR ALL NEW STUDENTS: A Leggz Recital is the safest and fastest running recital of all, with each student wearing an ID band and only 7-10 seconds between dances!
RECITAL FEES
In our constant effort to have the most enjoyable, exciting and efficient recital in Osceola county, a refundable fee of $50.00 per family is due by January 28, 2017. This fee will be refunded after the 2017 recital only if the student has attended and remained for the entire length of the recital. If the student leaves or is removed from the recital at any time before the end of the recital the $50 fee will be forfeited to Leggz Dance Academy.
SPECIALTY NUMBERS
If you were selected to perform in the Opening or Closing numbers, please let me know, IN WRITING, if there are any dates that you will be unable to attend rehearsals. Costumes have been ordered. Photos of the costumes will be on the bulletin board soon. By the way, it takes 16 hours just to fill out the order forms. This year we ordered from 9 different companies and purchased over $36,000.00 in costumes! NOTE TO PARENTS: Whether you are purchasing 1 or 10 costumes for your child, I know how expensive it is and how hard it is to come up with the extra money at Christmas time. Please consider making small costume payments starting this summer. We will start receiving payments as early as June. Every little bit helps!
PICTURE DAY
Picture Day for this year’s recital will be on Sunday, May 21st . Photos will be taken by Skip Stowers Photography.

ATTENTION ALL BALLET STUDENTS IN LEVELS 1 AND UP
Starting with Level 1, we teach the students Character Dance in addition to classical ballet. Character Dance is performed in all of the major ballets such as, Swan Lake, Sleeping Beauty, Coppelia and Nutcracker. Levels 1& 2 learn Hungarian dance, Levels 3&4 learn Russian dance, Levels 5&6 learn Polish Court dance, Level 7 learns Hungarian Court dance & Level 8 learns Russian Court. In order to teach these techniques properly, the students must have Character Skirts & Shoes. These need to be ordered by September 9TH so that we can begin teaching in October. If you have not ordered your skirt and shoes, please do so by the 9th. If you sew, we do have a pattern for the skirt that you can make yourself. The skirts we order are made very well and should last your child about 2 years. At that time, you can resell it before ordering a new one. Character shoes are $42.00 and Skirts are either $54 or $64 depending on the size needed.
Also, students in Grades 6-8 need to have a large white silk Free Movement Scarf. The cost for this is $37. This also MUST BE ORDERED BY SEPTEMBER 9TH.
PLEASE SPEAK UP
If you have any questions or concerns about your child’s dance training, studio policies, recital, etc, please don’t hesitate to speak with me! I am more than happy to explain things to you or to “fix” anything that might not be working. I am constantly trying to make things better here at Leggz and I am always open to new suggestions. I can’t be in all places at once, so I rely on other people’s eyes to help. Also, by explaining our teaching methods to parents, we increase our educating power to the students. SO SPEAK UP!
COMMITMENT
If you or your child begins to study dance, I would suggest that a commitment be made for a certain length of time. I do not believe in making anyone take dance lessons, but I strongly feel that once one starts, the commitment has to be followed through. Dancing can be difficult and fun at the same time. It will develop discipline determination and self confidence that are so necessary to succeed in life. Its rewards are not instantaneous. It takes patience, energy and a positive outlook. These traits will not be developed if one “gives up”. Hang in there everybody. You’ll be glad you did when you look back and see your accomplishments.
LABOR DAY
We will be closed on Monday, September 5th for Labor Day. This is one of our yearly holidays, and the classes do not need to be made up. We are going to be open on Saturday, September 3rd.

PROPER ATTIRE
Students must come to class in their proper leotard, tights and shoes in order to be admitted into class. This is for their safety and is part of the discipline of being a dancer. After all, you wouldn’t go to music lessons without your instrument or football practice without your helmet!
CHARACTER SKIRTS AND SHOES
Is your character skirt too small? Are your character shoes pinching your feet? Well, bring them in and we will try to sell them to someone who needs them.
ATTENTION BALLET STUDENTS IN LEVELS 1-8
Students in levels 1-8 are required to have Character Skirts and Shoes for their classes. This is an important part of their ballet training. Character Dance is necessary for all of the Classical Ballets, such as Swan Lake, Sleeping Beauty, Coppelia and Nutcracker. We are the only studio in the area that teaches it! Students in Ballet 3 & above also need ribbons on their ballet slippers.
Students in Ballet 6-8 need a silk scarf ASAP. Without the scarf, they are unable to learn any of the Free Movement work. They also need a long chiffon skirt to match their leotard. Students in these levels may wear any color leotard they want. Please order your silk scarf by September 3rd.
NO JEWELRY OR CELL PHONES
Please be advised, that jewelry of any kind is not permitted in any of our classes. Students will be asked to remove it and we cannot be responsible for lost or stolen jewelry, so please leave it at home.
